What Is Sexual Assault?
Sexual assault is any unwanted sexual contact or behavior that occurs without a person’s consent. This can include rape, attempted rape, groping, coercion, manipulation, or any situation where someone is pressured, threatened, or unable to give consent due to fear, intoxication, age, or vulnerability.
Sexual assault can be committed by anyone—partners, acquaintances, family members, or strangers—and can happen in any environment. Survivors may experience deep emotional and psychological effects such as anxiety, shame, dissociation, hypervigilance, depression, difficulty trusting others, or disruptions in relationships and daily functioning.
Most importantly: sexual assault is never the survivor’s fault, and healing is possible with compassionate, trauma-informed support.
